To connect to your new VPS, you need three things: its IP address, the username, and the password. Here's where to find each one.
Your username
The username for every VPS is root, whichever operating system you choose. The root user has full control of the server.
Your password
You chose your root password when you ordered your VPS. We also send your login details by email when your VPS is set up, so check your inbox for the welcome email.
Can't find the email? You can see a copy of every email we've sent you in the client area, under My Account → Email History (https://www.hooplahosting.co.nz/client/clientarea.php?action=emails).
Your IP address
- Log in to the client area and go to Services → My Services (https://www.hooplahosting.co.nz/client/clientarea.php?action=services).
- Click Manage next to your VPS.
- Scroll down to IP Assignments. Your VPS IP address is listed under IP, along with its netmask and gateway.
The same page shows your VPS's power status, the operating system it's running, and buttons to power it off, reset or reboot it.
Next: connect to your VPS
With your IP address and password, you can log in over SSH:
- On Windows, use Windows Terminal, PowerShell or PuTTY.
- On macOS or Linux, use the built-in Terminal app.
In both cases, the command is:
ssh root@YOUR_SERVER_IPIf you can't connect over SSH, you can still reach your server through the Open Console button on your VPS's management page. It opens a console in your browser, as if you had a screen plugged into the server.
Keep your login details safe
- Don't share your root password, and never send it to us in a support ticket. We'll never ask for it by email.
- Once you've logged in, you can change the password with the
passwdcommand. - For better security, set up SSH keys and turn off password logins.
Forgotten your password?
If you've changed the password and can't remember it, open a support ticket and we'll help you regain access. If you don't need anything on the server, you can also reinstall the operating system from your VPS's management page and set a new password. Reinstalling erases everything on the VPS.
