We back up every cPanel hosting account daily at midnight (NZ time) and keep the last 14 days. You can restore from these backups yourself in cPanel using JetBackup, without waiting for us. You can bring back your whole account, or just the files, database or mailbox you need.
Before you start
- A restore overwrites what's there now. If you restore a file, database or account, any changes made since that backup are replaced. If you might need anything from the current version, download a copy first (see Import and export a database with phpMyAdmin for databases, or download files from File Manager).
- Pick the right date. If your site was hacked or broken, choose a backup from before the problem started. If you're not sure when that was, restore a single file or database first to check.
- Restore the smallest thing that fixes the problem. Restoring one folder or database is quicker and safer than restoring the whole account.
Open JetBackup
- Log in to cPanel from your service page under Services → My Services (https://www.hooplahosting.co.nz/client/clientarea.php?action=services).
- Scroll to the JetBackup section, or type JetBackup in the cPanel search bar.
You'll see separate options for Full Account Backups, File Backups, Database Backups, Email Backups, Cron Job Backups, DNS Zone Backups and SSL Certificates.
Restore website files
- Click File Backups.
- Find the date you want and click it to select it.
- To restore everything, click Restore. To restore only some files or folders, click Change Files Selection (or File Manager), browse to what you need, tick it, and then click Restore.
- Confirm the restore. It's added to the queue and runs in the background.
For a WordPress site, restoring the public_html folder (or your addon domain's folder) together with its database from the same date brings the whole site back to that day.
Restore a database
- Click Database Backups.
- Select the database and the date you want.
- Click Restore and confirm.
Not sure which database your site uses? For WordPress, it's the DB_NAME line in wp-config.php.
Restore email
- Click Email Backups.
- Select the email account and the date you want.
- Click Restore and confirm.
This is handy if messages were deleted by mistake. Mail that arrived after the backup was taken isn't in the backup, so it won't be brought back.
Restore your whole account
- Click Full Account Backups.
- Select the date you want and click Restore.
- Choose what to include (files, databases, email, DNS and so on) and confirm.
A full restore replaces everything on your account, including email that's arrived since. Only use it when lots of things need to go back at once. If you're unsure, open a ticket first and we'll help you choose.
Check progress
Click Queue in the JetBackup section to see your restore. Small restores usually finish within a few minutes. A full account can take longer, depending on its size. Once it shows as completed, check your site or mailbox. You may need to clear your browser cache, and your caching plugin's cache if you use one.
Downloading instead of restoring
If you'd rather look through an old copy without changing anything on your account, you can download a backup from JetBackup instead. See Download a full backup of your hosting account.
Troubleshooting
- The restore failed with a disk space error: your account needs room for the restored data. Free some space, or open a ticket. See Disk space full or nearly full.
- The site still looks the same after restoring: clear your browser and caching plugin caches, and check you restored both the files and the database.
- The backup I need is older than 14 days: we only keep 14 days. If you have your own copy, we can help you restore that instead.
Need help?
If you'd rather we did the restore for you, open a support ticket telling us what to restore and from which date, and we'll take care of it.
